Ellsworth "Dutch" Barnard

English professor at Northern during the 1960s

Ellsworth “Dutch” Barnard was an English professor at Northern during the 1960s. Well known for being a “radical,” his letter to the Northern News in 1965 praising Vietnam protests in other parts of the country sparked pro-Vietnam demonstrations at Northern.

When McClellan was fired in 1967, Barnard put in his resignation for the end of the year to show his support for McClellan. When McClellan was re-instated, Barnard tried to take back his resignation but was told that his old position was no longer open.
